Henry DeKoven business correspondence and ships' papers, , 1817-1866.

Henry L. DeKoven was a ship captain and merchant of Middletown, Connecticut. The cargo he generally carried was rice, which he brought from Batavia. Unfortunately in one instance, his agents in Amsterdam and London accused Captain Sebor of the Ship America of purposely shorting the weight of the rice. One of DeKoven's more interesting trips was to Canton where he received a shipment of silks in 1826; the receipt is partially written in Chinese. Other shipping-related documents include two bills of landing in which the Ship America carried a bag of Spanish dollars to Canton in 1825, and two years later in 1827 on the Ship Splendid he carried furs to the same port; insurance on the Ship America in 1825, and freight receipts and an account from London, 1818. His trade was often limited because of a recession that made money scarce and credit questionable. To supplement the merchant trade, DeKoven also invested in land in Augusta, Georgia, and bought stock in the Commercial Bank of New Orleans., among other investments. The 1866 document bears the signature of R.M. Johnson as a clerk in a bank.
